Congress is considering a bill that would turn your car into a 24/7 surveillance device for the benefit of for-profit companies. Supporters of the DRIVER Act claim this data would only be used to make cars and roads safer, but if you read the legislation closely, the opposite is true.

The DRIVER Act rewrites vehicle data rules to put the safety, cybersecurity and privacy of drivers at risk. Instead of the claimed goal of advancing data privacy, it would give rental car companies and other vehicle fleet owners the unrestricted ability to access, manipulate and sell consumers’ personal data. That includes where you go, how you drive and other potentially sensitive information tied directly to you and your vehicle. Once that happens, there are few limits on who can use that data or how.

Congress cannot open the door to data theft and manipulation, creating potential legal, ethical and safety concerns for drivers.
