The auto industry is an indispensable economic engine in the United States that drives opportunity and social mobility. It supports 10 million jobs coast-to-coast, five percent of GDP and adds $1.2 trillion to the economy every year. Every country wants a healthy, growing auto industry – a building block for any modern economy. This is especially true in the U.S. where the auto industry underpins our industrial base and global competitiveness and supports American economic and national security. We need government policies that protect and promote automaking in the U.S.
Our auto ecosystem includes auto manufacturers producing nearly all vehicles sold today in the United States, as well as major equipment suppliers, battery manufacturers, semiconductor makers, and autonomous vehicle and technology corporations. Automaking is America’s largest manufacturing sector and underpins our industrial base. The auto sector employs 10 million Americans in all 50 states. We build 10.3 million vehicles annually here at home and export 1.5 million. The industry generates five percent of U.S. GDP and drives $1.2 trillion into the economy annually. Every $1 added to the economy by motor vehicles manufacturing creates an additional $4.23 in economic value – every direct job in vehicle manufacturing supports another nine American jobs.
We believe American consumers must always be able to choose a vehicle that is right for them and their family. Today’s auto marketplace offers hundreds of makes and models – many different powertrains at multiple price points. There’s literally something for everyone. The auto industry is positioned to play a central role in advancing America’s economic and national security interests if permitted to operate in a durable, predictable and market-driven policy environment. This is a pro-growth recipe for American leadership and competitiveness that will preserve consumer choice, create manufacturing jobs and transform the American industrial base.
Safety is a top priority of the auto industry. Vehicles on the road continue to get even more safe as automakers across the board test, develop and integrate breakthrough safety technologies that help save lives and prevent injuries. Automakers need a predictable and reasonable regulatory environment that supports automotive innovation. Government and safety stakeholders can incentivize and promote continued American leadership in next-generation automotive safety technologies to help reduce the unacceptable number of fatalities on our nation’s roadways.
